Toni Nadal, mentor to Rafa Nadal, shares an unforgettable lesson on attitude and effort at Agora Portals

A few days ago, we welcomed Toni Nadal to Agora Portals — a figure who has left a profound mark on Spanish and international sport, and whose understanding of hard work and discipline continues to inspire generations. His meeting with our Sixth Form students became a true life lesson on what sustains a successful trajectory.

During the conference, Toni Nadal shared how, throughout the 17 years he accompanied Rafa Nadal — a period in which the tennis player won 74 titles, including 16 Grand Slams, 4 Davis Cups and 2 Olympic medals — talent was never the only driving force behind success. He explained that talent must be combined with hard work, discipline and the ability to sustain effort, emphasising that excellence is built through consistency rather than shortcuts.

With striking clarity that captivated the students, he reflected on today’s world, marked by immediacy, where personal value is often overstated and immediate reward is mistaken for real success. This culture, he noted, creates frustration, as not everything will be easy along their journey, and things will not always go well. For this reason, he insisted that the ability to endure difficulty — perseverance — is one of the most important skills a young person can develop today.

The attitude that transforms the path

One of the central messages was the power of attitude. Toni highlighted that Rafa Nadal did not remain among the best players in the world for 17 years because of his serve or his backhand, but because of something much deeper: his personal attitude, both in the face of difficulties and in moments of success.

For him, attitude is the tool capable of reshaping a person’s path. It is not only about wanting to win, but about being consistent with what you have chosen, doing everything possible to achieve what you aspire to, and creating habits that bring you closer each day to the best version of yourself.

Habits, responsibility and the will to improve

Toni Nadal encouraged students to focus on what truly depends on them:

Attitude
Effort
Willingness to learn

On the importance of developing solid habits, he shared a particularly illustrative reflection:

"Hit the ball as well as you can every time you do it, and train as if it were a final. If you save your best shot for the very last day, you will not be ready and you will not succeed."

His message was clear: excellence does not appear spontaneously; it is trained. It grows through every small gesture, every attempt, and every decision that is repeated until it becomes part of oneself.

Professional success through personal development

Toni Nadal also spoke about the link between personal growth and professional success. For him, a meaningful life is built through commitment to oneself and the satisfaction of having fulfilled one’s duties by striving to surpass personal limits.

He also highlighted the importance of knowing who you are and where you want to go — something essential for making coherent decisions and facing challenges that may arise along the way.

In one of the most moving moments of the talk, Toni Nadal reminded students that those who demand more from us and push us to go further often do so precisely because they believe in us and care about us. A reflection that invites us to understand that expectations, discipline and rigour can also be expressions of care and genuine commitment to our growth.

Inspiring Talks: learning from those who leave a mark

This conference, organised thanks to our collaboration with the Lo Que De Verdad Importa Foundation, is part of our Inspiring Talks series — a programme that brings our students real testimonies of leadership, resilience and effort.

It is a project that strengthens the values of the IB Continuum — autonomy, critical thinking, resilience and integrity — and connects students with experiences that inspire them to give their best.

Our educational vision at Agora Portals is grounded in a learning experience that goes beyond the classroom, enriched by role models and meaningful encounters that accompany our students throughout their personal growth.
