Sustainable education: how we shape committed citizens at Agora Portals

Educating with ecological awareness from an early age

Environmental awareness begins with small gestures, but also with big questions: how do we look after the sea? What impact do our actions have? Why is it important to protect ecosystems? What can we do from school?

The main objective is for students to understand their relationship with the planet and discover that their decisions matter. As a result, they develop sensitivity, responsibility and the ability to take action. Sustainability initiatives at Agora Portals

At Agora Portals, we have initiatives that are closely linked to the protection of the marine environment. One of the most representative is the Posidonia Experience, a pioneering project in Spain that aims to raise students’ awareness of the importance of preserving seas and oceans.

This programme includes workshops, talks, lectures, excursions and activities to help students gain a deeper understanding of the marine environment. It also includes experiences such as studying Posidonia both in the classroom and in its natural habitat, strengthening a form of learning that goes beyond theory.

In addition, our school has been internationally recognised for its environmental commitment, becoming a finalist in the 2023 World’s Best School Prizes with the Sea Room project. As with Posidonia Experience, these initiatives have transformed the way students interact with the marine ecosystem, integrating workshops, outings, beach clean-ups and conservation activities into the academic life of the school.

In line with this, projects such as ReBlue also stand out, where learning goes beyond the classroom and transforms the community. Our Year 8 students, inspired by exchange students from Cyprus, turned a small gesture, such as sharing beach toys, into a highly meaningful relief for the coastal environment of our island. Without doubt, this shows how environmental education can generate a real impact both inside and outside school.

School garden, recycling and awareness campaigns

As we have seen, at Agora Portals, the marine environment offers a unique opportunity to work on these values through experience. Looking after beaches, observing ecosystems and taking part in conservation-related activities allow students to better understand the impact of their decisions.

Likewise, the school garden has great educational value, as it allows students to observe the cycles of nature, take part in its care and understand in a practical way the importance of respecting resources. This is complemented by their active participation in recycling campaigns and environmental awareness initiatives.

Although each initiative has its own format, they all share the same purpose: to raise awareness, encourage responsible habits and educate students who are able to become actively involved in caring for the planet.

Participation in international environmental programmes

Agora Portals’ commitment is also reflected in our participation and recognition within international environmental programmes. As mentioned above, the school was included among the 10 shortlisted schools for the World’s Best School Prize for Environmental Action.

In addition, we have obtained the Eco-School accreditation and the Green Flag, and we have been certified as a European Blue School. All of this strengthens our position as a school committed to environmental education and to a way of understanding sustainability through everyday school life.
