REblue: when learning goes beyond the classroom and transforms the community

At Agora Portals we strongly believe that education finds its true meaning when it connects with real life and creates impact. Today, we are proud to share REblue, a project led by our Year 9 students that brings together sustainability, social commitment and meaningful learning.

A project with purpose

REblue is built on a simple yet powerful idea: to promote the reuse of beach toys through a system that is accessible to everyone. Thanks to the collaboration with Puerto Portals, the students have successfully installed two boxes at the Playa del Oratorio under the motto:

“Borrow, play, return”

An initiative designed to reduce unnecessary plastic consumption, particularly in tourist settings, while encouraging a more responsible use of resources.

As an Eco-Schools school, this project reflects our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those related to responsible consumption and the protection of marine ecosystems.

Learning that becomes action

Beyond the idea itself, REblue represents a deep learning journey. The students have developed key skills such as creativity, teamwork, problem identification and solution-finding, all while working towards a project with real impact.

This initiative did not emerge by chance. It was inspired by a project shared by a group of students from Cyprus who visited our school last year, demonstrating how simple ideas can travel, evolve and create meaningful change.

The speech that started it all

Below, we share the words of Gabriela, which truly capture the spirit of the project:

REBLUE Speech by Gabrielle

Little question: have you ever gone to the beach when you were little in a different country, being a tourist, and didn’t have any toys to play with and had to buy new ones? Well, there is where our project comes in. Throughout this project we’ve been developing different skills like creativity, problem identification and solution, and teamwork, all with the goal of creating something real that has a real impact and can help our community, not only our school community, but also what this island is sometimes made from, which are tourists.

But our idea didn’t come out of nowhere. Last year, a group of students from Cyprus came to our school to talk about a similar initiative. They showed us their project and how even being simple, it made a big difference, and encouraged our school to continue similar projects, and we decided to continue that idea in our own way.

We want to place boxes with beach toys in Puerto Portals, for which we already got the approval. Inside these boxes there will be beach toys like buckets, figures and shovels, collected through donations we are planning. The main idea is that families can borrow the toys, play with them and then return them when they leave. It’s simple but it can have a big meaning and impact on what recycling can be, because, first, it helps people enjoy the beach without needing to buy new plastic toys that might only be used once and then thrown away and second, it supports a more sustainable way of enjoying our environment, because instead of constantly consuming, we are reusing.

A project now brought to life

The installation of the boxes has now taken place, marking the transition from idea to action. This milestone was supported by Rafael Barea Roig, Head of School, and Elena Seijas, Director of Communications and Institutional Relations at Puerto Portals, highlighting the strength of collaboration between education and external partners.

A team making an impact

The project has been led by the Ambassadors of Tomorrow team: Gabriela, Amaia, Helena, Fiona, Milla and Farah.

Their work is a clear example of how students can become true agents of change when given the opportunity to take action.

Education that leaves a mark

REblue is much more than a school project. It is a powerful example of how education can go beyond the classroom, raise awareness and actively contribute to improving our environment.

Because the future is not something we wait for… it is something we build. And today, these students are already doing just that.
